Mammut's hybrid Foraker Jacket is described by the manufacturers as an "Innovative jacket for alpine pursuits, but in reality that's just part of the story.
The reality is that the Foraker has been one of the hardest products to pigeon-hole of any review product we've had. While designed as a slightly insulating but flexible and breathable jacket for alpine pursuits it's equally at home as a mid layer or as an outer layer for mountain biking and trail running. Lightweight, at just 268g, its "hybrid" tag reflects the range of potential uses as much as its fusion of insulation and stretch fabric panels.
At the heart of the Mammut Foraker is a combination of Polartec Alpha synthetic insulation and a stretchy, doubled-weave, soft shell on the shoulders, arms and down each side of the main body. The idea is that the stretch panels provide both flexibility and breathability, particularly on the move, while the Polartec Alpha provides just enough insulation to prevent chilling when taking a break. Pertex Micolight fabric keeps the weight to a minimum , helped by a minimalist design that includes just a single chest pocket and a simple hem adjuster; No cuff adjustment, no hood and no hand-warmer pockets in sight.
