Jack Wolfskin 3 in 1 Altiplano Jacket

Written by

Another review from our new Mountaineering Review team, this time it's Fraser Brown. He's an avid Mountaineer and part of West Lothian Mountaineering Club. He takes part in Rock and Ice Climbing and basically would just prefer to be outdoors, like the rest of us.

Well I've had the Altiplano 3 in 1 jacket on test for three months now. I've used it nearly every day walking the dog come rain hail or shine and on a few trips up the mountains with a full on winter day over Tarmachan Ridge.

The main jacket is Texapore O2+ 2L waterproof made from 100% polyester. It has two front pockets that are fleece lined with storm zips and large pit zips with storm flaps. The main zip has storm flaps. The hood has pull cords to adjust the fit and opening with a semi ridged visor.

The inner jacket is a padded insulated jacket with hood two pockets and thumb loops on the wrists. The under arm and side panels are breathable light material.

The Review.

Jack Wolfskin has made the fit of the two jackets very well. I have problems with jackets fitting being 6'4" but this is the best fit of any I've had or tried on with regards sleeve and body size.

I like the feel of this jacket, it is heavy compared to my normal climbing waterproof but not by much. The look is good with lots of complimentary remarks made about it on days out. The hood works well and can close up really well.

The Texapore material has worked well in some really heavy rain over the past few weeks and also with a blizzard on the last day of testing.

It's not all good, I have a few issues with it that need looked it from Jack Wolfskin before it would get a glowing review.

Firstly the system for joining the two together is pointless, it's a pain to do and if you want to join them you have to take both jackets off to get it done right. To be honest I stopped after the first few goes.

The pit zips are a real pain to do if you have a backpack on or have gloves! The storm flap makes this so hard that I ended up asking someone to do it for me.

Once you have the main jacket zip done up right to the top it's is tight and it is quite hard to fasten the top stud, I found this to be uncomfortable after a while.

The Insulated Jacket has only had one small problem the hood was too big so flaps about in the wind and it was too small for my climbing helmet to be used with it.

The Verdict

The two jackets are well made and I'm very impressed with them as two separate jackets that work together. But the joining system is a pointless exercise as you will never use it. The main jacket is great and will handle everything you can throw at it as an outdoor activities jacket. The insulation jacket is great and is both warm and breathable.

You can get this set in the sale on Jack Wolfskin website for £190 normally £270. At the full price if I was looking for a good outdoor jacket and insulation jacket I'd happily pay it but for the sale price this is a bargain.

Despite the few things that I'd change I would happily recommend this as a good all round hillwalking jacket. If Jack Wolfskin changed the few points I noted this would be a very hard jacket to beat on the market today.
