Owing to the British Winter conditions so far, I have been unable to test the Plano Hoody in full winter conditions although have come close on a few occasions whilst working or just enjoying some recreation in the mountains. Certainly, with its membrane and ruffled fleece lining, this jacket does insulate well as proved on a day’s test on Helvellyn Dodds recently. On this day the forecast was to be a few degrees above freezing with westerlies gusting up to 55mph and showers likely and as we set off from the vehicle at Row Head things were looking pretty nasty; although this soon changed. However, the wind remained as did the low temperature and with windchill taken into account, I would reckon that it was certainly freezing and on occasion a few degrees under that.
Our walk took us on a 12km circuit via, Dowthwaite Head and Deepdale before we headed aloft to brave the full force of the wind on Hart Side. Wearing only a Driflo under the Plano Jacket, I was warm all the way over Hart Side, Green Side and up to the summit of Stybarrow Dodd at 2756 feet. It was only upon stopping in the lee of this summit for some lunch that chilling down necessitated that I don a hardshell over the top of the Plano Hoody and I remained that way for the rest of the day.
Along the way to Stybarrow Dodd we were subject to a few showers and I was impressed with the way the jacket beaded and repelled the water. Certainly, I did not get damp due to water ingress – I wish I could say this of my other softshell – no names mentioned!
I do like the Plano Hoody and can honestly say it has fast become my favourite general outdoor jacket. I chose black in order to soak up some heat on cold sunny winter days but it comes in a range of colours (red?) and I like the fact that the hood can be removed although I haven’t felt the need to do so yet. This jacket is warm, comfortable and a good fit and it is good to know that the hood will accept a large climbing helmet – essential if it is to be used on forthcoming winter outings which it certainly will.
This jacket will be getting a full winter outing in Scotland starting on January 19th and I will be looking to add further to this review subsequently.
