Terry Abraham's Life of a Mountain: Scafell Pike has smashed all records with its BBC4 debut last night (14th Jan). Figures from the BBC this morning put the number of viewers on BBC4 last night at over 900,000 with more to be added once a 3 am repeat and iPlayer and taken into account.

Adding in DVD sales and downloads Life of a Mountain Scafell Pike will have reached over a million viewers since it's premiere in May. The average BBC4 audience is 385,000.

The hour long edit was specially made for the BBC as part of a 3 year contract with film maker Terry Abraham and the viewing figures make the documentary one of BBC4's biggest hits. Following the 9pm broadcast the film was repeated at 3am and will no doubt be repeated again over the 3 years of the deal. The full 2 hour version has already broken all records on leading download site Steep Edge and Terry is preparing for a further surge in demand following the TV debut.

Talking to Terry this morning he's still "gobsmacked" at the response and has been receiving congratulations both from the BBC and thousands of viewers who have taken to social media, with #lifeofamountain trending nationally on Twitter last night. Commenting last night, in typical style, Terry said "Tonight feels like that next level. I reached another one. In crazy short time. And for what?? Loving the outdoors"

Highlighted in national newspapers  as "Documentary of the Week" the film was described in the Radio Times as "....one of those plain and simple, knock 'em dead nature documentaries....a complete delight" while the Guardian made it the Pick of the Day and the Daily Telegraph described it as "A beautifully filmed documentary that is good for the soul". On iPlayer it features on the home page and is available here.

The DVD is available through the BMC Shop, Amazon, Striding Edge or a selection of shops throughout the Lake District. Our review of the full version is available here.
